MULTIMODALITET

It studies signs and symbols, which enable us to communicate. These signs can be for example, writing, speaking, singing, taking pictures and the communication that happens through and with them. Through this theory it is easier to understand the world through pictures, signs, cultures, the way we talk and see. Pictures, logos, music, Internet etc are called by this theory "modes". With different modes you can send different kinds of communicative messages (EX: to form an image to text) It is important to realize/be aware that it is culturally bound how people interpret things.

Begreppet multimodalitet uppmärksammar det faktum att kommunikation alltid sker i flera teckensystem samtidigt (Kress 1996, 2000b; Kress & van Leeuwen 2001; Kress, Jewitt m fl 2001)

Multimodality in a classroom means that you use creatively different modes. Teaching and learning doesn't have to happen only through writing and reading, it can also happen through different mediums such as music, drawing, even through touch and smell. Learning can go from text to picture like for example when students listen to a story and make a picture out of it. The multimodal world of today takes into account the different ways you can teach and learn through digitalized material. Nowadays students might listen to the story from a computer or an Ipad and then form the picture. It is the choice of modes that matters.

Genom att vi alltid kombinerar olika sådana uttrycksformer, eller teckensystem (modes), kan vår kommunikation sägas vara multimodal (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2001)
